Fade Haircut
What is a fade haircut?
A fade is a gradual transition of hair length on the sides and back of the head. It can be combined with a short or longer top, bangs, comb-over, or curls. Therefore, the word “fade” alone doesn’t fully describe how the entire hairstyle should look. Discuss the fade height, shortest length, and top shape before the haircut.
If you have an example photo, show which detail you like. It could be a low fade, a strong contrast on the sides, or a longer top. You don’t have to choose all the elements visible in the photo together.
Low, medium, or high fade?
With a low fade, the shortest area remains closer to the ears and lower back of the head. Medium or high fades rise higher and change the silhouette of the sides. These terms are not exact measurements, so ask the barber to show the planned height on your head.
Discuss the fade on the back of the head separately: should it follow the head’s contour, go lower, or form a different line. A side photo helps talk about the ear area, but alone it’s not enough to imagine the entire back. A view from behind is also helpful.
Do you want a skin fade?
Fade height and shortest length are different choices. You may want a low fade down to the skin or leave short hairs. If you don’t want the skin fully exposed, say so clearly instead of relying only on words like “short” or “zero”.
Ask what tools the barber will use to finish the shortest zone. Also, show areas you don’t want touched and mention any previous irritation from a very close shave. Discuss this part of the service before starting work.
Top Length and Styling
Choose how you’d like to wear the top: forward, to the side, back, or naturally falling. Show how much length you want to keep at the forehead and crown. If you’re growing hair out, you can agree to just tidy the sides, but this should be noted when booking.
Ask to explain how the chosen top will look without salon styling. If you don’t want to blow-dry your hair daily or use styling products, say so. The haircut plan should match your real daily habits, not just the effect in a photo.
Booking and Maintaining the Shape
Check if the service includes cutting the top, washing, drying, and finishing contours. If you want to groom your beard as well, mention it separately. Arrange price and duration based on the entire set of services.
As hair grows out, the fade’s appearance changes, but there’s no mandatory refresh interval. Schedule your next visit when you’re no longer satisfied with the look. Photograph your preferred haircut from the side and back and note down the lengths used, so you have a clear example next time.
