Choosing a Nail Polish Color
When choosing a nail polish color, the shade name alone is not enough. The same color group can include a sheer, milky, fully opaque, glossy, or matte finish. Before polishing, specify whether you want a subtle coat, a bold accent, or a specific combination with your outfit.
Shade and Coverage
Show several examples and explain what you like about them. For instance, a pink shade can be warmer or cooler, and its coverage can be translucent or opaque. The word “natural” alone doesn’t clarify whether you want to see the nail edge through the polish. It’s best to agree on this separately.
If you hesitate between similar colors, ask to compare them side by side. Check what finish and how many layers are shown in the technician’s example. A photo from your phone helps explain your idea, but make the final choice by seeing a sample available at the salon whenever possible.
Matte, glossy, or shimmering surface?
Discuss the surface effect along with the color. Say whether you want a uniform gloss, a matte finish, fine glitter, or more prominent decorative particles. If you like only the shade in the sample, clearly state you do not want other visible decorations.
You can combine multiple effects, but specify in advance which nails they are for. The scope differs between one accent and decorating all nails. Ask to explain how the desired combination affects the booking duration and price, and confirm your choice before starting.
Color by Your Choice
Skin tone, season, or occasion can inspire your choice, but these are not mandatory rules. You can choose a color simply because you like it. If you want to match with clothing or accessories, bring their photo or a color sample and say whether you aim for similarity or contrast.
If the color is for a specific event, show the planned overall look. Also discuss how you want to appear after the event. There’s no need to think that one shade must fit all situations; you can choose a compromise that suits you.
Color choice is not the same as service choice
Check whether you are booking a basic polish, gel polish, or another finish. Also indicate the existing polish and whether it needs removal. The desired shade alone does not explain which materials will be used and what work the visit will include.
Discuss length and shape before final polishing. Ask if the palette includes your desired shade and whether additional designs cost extra. Do not start removing existing polish on your own just because you plan to change its color; arrange preparation with the technician.
What to record for next time?
Write down the name or number of the preferred shade, the type of finish, and surface effect. Ask for care and removal instructions specifically for the chosen finish. If next time you want a lighter, sheerer, or bolder result, you’ll have a concrete reference point for discussion.
